Everything You Asked About the Deleted Degrees of Freedom
80+ readers replied to the paper launch. Skeptics, engineers, physicists, builders. These were the questions that came up most. Here are the answers.
When I published “The Deleted Degrees of Freedom” two weeks ago, I expected pushback. What I got instead was 80+ substantive replies across two days. Technical peers asking about discriminator experiments. Engineers wanting to know if their FEM solvers already use the “deleted” physics. Builders asking how to test scalar-longitudinal waves in their own shops. And yes, skeptics asking whether this is just repackaged fringe physics.
No hostile reviewers. Zero “this is wrong” responses. The “rehabilitation not revolution” framing seemed to remove the attack surface. But the questions were sharp, and they deserve real answers.
I’ve organized them by what people actually wanted to know.
⬅️ Previous: Gauge fixing is lossy compression. The Aharonov-Bohm effect is the proof that the compression destroyed something real.
The Basics
What did Heaviside actually delete?
Maxwell’s original theory (1873) had twenty equations and sixteen components. Heaviside simplified to four equations and six components (𝐄 and 𝐁). The other ten encode waves without magnetic fields, forces in field-free regions, a scalar energy channel, and a mathematical bridge to gravity. None were disproven. All were defined away by gauge convention.
What’s the difference between scalar waves and longitudinal waves?
Three distinct wave types exist in Extended Electrodynamics: transverse (standard light and radio, 𝐄 and 𝐁 perpendicular to propagation), longitudinal (oscillates along propagation direction, carries longitudinal 𝐄 plus the scalar field C, zero 𝐁), and pure scalar (C only, energy without momentum). “Scalar wave” is the community’s catch-all term. “Scalar-longitudinal” is precise. Most phenomena people discuss, like Faraday cage penetration and VPT transmission, are the coupled scalar-longitudinal mode.
Is this new physics?
No. That’s the point. Everything was already in Maxwell’s original equations. Four independent derivations from two research programs between 2003 and 2020 recovered it using standard mathematical tools: tensor analysis, the Stueckelberg mechanism, Helmholtz decomposition, geometric algebra. No new formalism required. The convergence from independent starting points is the argument.
The Skepticism
Isn’t this just fringe physics?
The Stueckelberg Lagrangian is standard quantum field theory. Woodside’s uniqueness theorems are peer-reviewed. The Aharonov-Bohm effect is confirmed. Superconductors use 𝐀 as primary variable since 1935. The individual components are mainstream. The synthesis is new.
Math can model anything. Where’s the evidence?
Aharonov-Bohm, 1986 definitive confirmation. Maxwell-Lodge effect, 2008 classical demonstration. US Patent 9,306,527 for transmission through Faraday cages via vector potential topology. Superconductor engineering via the London equation since 1935. Every MRI machine on Earth. The paper doesn’t ask you to trust the math. It asks you to explain the experiments without it.
Why does standard physics work if it’s incomplete?
Three reasons. First, modern physics DOES use potential primacy. The Standard Model is a gauge theory. Its fundamental variables are connections, which are potentials, not curvatures, which are field strengths. Every Feynman diagram is computed from propagators of A_μ, not from propagators of 𝐄 and 𝐁. Second, the simplified version works perfectly for transverse phenomena: radiation, QED, every precision measurement. It fails only for longitudinal and scalar modes that standard experiments don’t probe. Third, gauge freedom constrains the description of 𝐀, not its physical content.
Tesla was a crank. Why mention him?
Tesla predicted longitudinal electromagnetic waves. He didn’t have the formal framework. The framework now exists through Extended Electrodynamics and the Stueckelberg mechanism. Four independent derivations confirm the waves he predicted are in the equations. The paper provides the math Tesla lacked.
The Technical Questions
What’s the cleanest experiment to confirm the scalar-longitudinal mode?
Three binary tests in one apparatus. First: does a Faraday-caged monopolar receiver pick up the signal? That tests penetration. Second: does a monopolar antenna receive while a dipole antenna doesn’t? That tests mode selectivity. Third: does attenuation follow 1/r² instead of 1/r? That tests the distance law. Use a VPT geometry source, a coiled-coil with 𝐁 = 0 exterior. All three together kill the near-field interpretation. This was one of the sharpest questions from launch night, and it deserves its own paper.
Does the scalar-longitudinal mode travel faster than light?
No. The wave equation □C = 0 has c as the phase velocity. No superluminal propagation. The light cone is respected. Tesla’s reported 1.57c measurement was a phase velocity in the Earth-ionosphere waveguide. Guided waves routinely exceed c in phase velocity. The group velocity stays at or below c.
How does this connect to gravity?
Through Kaluza-Klein, 1921. The vector potential A_μ is literally a component of the five-dimensional spacetime metric. Gauge transformations are coordinate transformations in the fifth dimension. Deleting EM degrees of freedom deletes gravitational degrees of freedom. Gravity Probe B confirmed gravitomagnetic frame-dragging at 37.2 milliarcseconds per year in 2011.
What about Newton’s third law?
The Grassmann force law, which is the standard EM force law, is provably non-reciprocal for open circuits. F₁₂ ≠ -F₂₁ when ∇·J ≠ 0. This is a mathematical fact, not speculation. Restoring the longitudinal Ampere force via the Whittaker force law fixes it. The symmetry was never broken. It was gauged away.
The Applications
What practical technology can be built?
Communication through barriers: metal, water, rock, tissue. Energy transmission through walls. Sensing through reactor vessels and biological tissue. Phase engineering via the full potential hierarchy. There’s already a US patent (9,306,527) for through-barrier transmission using vector potential topology.
Can this replace power lines?
In principle: the scalar energy channel carries power without magnetic fields. Tesla was chasing this at Wardenclyffe. In practice: demonstrated at lab scale only. Grid-level wireless power is an open engineering problem.
How do I test if a “scalar wave” device is real?
Three tests. Does it produce 𝐁 = 0 with nonzero 𝐀? Does the signal penetrate a Faraday cage? Is it receivable by a monopolar antenna? If the manufacturer can’t answer these, the “scalar” label is marketing. This three-test discriminator came directly from a reader question and it’s probably the most practically useful thing in the entire FAQ.
The Philosophy
Was Heaviside’s intent nefarious?
No. Pragmatic. He wanted simpler equations for telegraph engineering and he got them. The problem was the next generation promoting a convenience into a truth. Heaviside knew he was cutting. He used the word “murder.” The people who inherited his equations forgot a cut had been made.
Is this a conspiracy?
The paper documents institutional inertia, not conspiracy. Textbooks copy textbooks. Professors teach what they were taught. Funding follows established frameworks. The Lorenz/Lorentz misattribution, documented by Jackson and Okun in 2001, shows how a single name can be erased from the record within one generation through careless citation. No coordination required.
What about the aether?
The paper avoids the word. Too much baggage. But the structured vacuum it describes, the quantum zero-point field, the dynamical Casimir effect, potential-mediated coupling in field-free regions, does the same work the 19th-century aether was supposed to do. Just with equations and experimental confirmation instead of a mechanical model.
These questions came from real readers in real time. Every one of them made the paper stronger. If you have a question that isn’t here, reply to this post or reach out directly.
