The Born Rule Contains Both Time Directions
P = ψψ*. One factor propagates forward in time. The other propagates backward. Every probability you’ve ever calculated used both.
Every time you flip a coin, roll a die, or measure a quantum particle, you calculate a probability. In quantum mechanics, the equation for probability has two parts. One part moves forward in time. The other moves backward.
That’s not a metaphor. It’s what the math says. And nobody talks about it.

The Equation Nobody Reads Twice
The equation is called the Born rule. It’s the most-used formula in quantum mechanics: P = ψψ*. It gives you the probability of finding a particle in a given state. Every quantum prediction ever verified by experiment comes from this equation.
Here’s what the textbooks gloss over. The formula has two factors. ψ, the wave function, propagates forward in time. ψ*, the complex conjugate, propagates backward. Wigner proved this in the 1930s: the time-reversal operator in quantum mechanics IS complex conjugation. When you write ψ*, you’re writing a wave that runs backward through time.
Every probability you’ve ever calculated in quantum mechanics is a product of a forward wave and a backward wave. Both are in the equation. Both are doing work. But the standard interpretation treats the backward-running part as a mathematical trick for turning a complex number into a real one. Not as something physical.
The question is: why not?
Wheeler and Feynman Already Knew
In 1945, Wheeler and Feynman published their absorber theory. Their central idea: the electromagnetic field acting on one particle due to another is not the standard retarded field. It’s the time-symmetric combination:
F = ½(F_retarded + F_advanced)
Half retarded, half advanced. Equal parts of both time directions. The field doesn’t just propagate outward from its source. It propagates inward from the absorber. The interaction is a handshake across the light cone, mediated by the universe’s response.
This sounds exotic until you notice what it solves. The theory eliminates self-interaction divergences. There’s no field of a particle acting on itself, just direct particle-particle action along the light cone. The radiation reaction force, which in the standard theory requires mass renormalization to handle, emerges automatically from the absorber’s advanced response. Dirac had already shown in 1938 that using half the difference between retarded and advanced fields eliminates the divergent self-energy. Wheeler and Feynman provided the physical mechanism.
The apparent arrow of time in radiation, the fact that antennas radiate outward rather than inward, is not a consequence of the equations. The equations are symmetric. The arrow comes from boundary conditions: the assumption that the universe is a “perfect absorber,” that all emitted radiation is eventually absorbed. In a universe that satisfies this condition, the advanced waves from all absorbers sum to produce the observed retarded radiation plus the correct radiation reaction force. The asymmetry is cosmological, not fundamental.
Cramer’s Extension
In 1986, John Cramer extended Wheeler-Feynman into quantum mechanics with the Transactional Interpretation. Quantum events aren’t instantaneous collapses. They’re handshakes. An emitter sends an “offer wave” ψ forward in time. An absorber sends a “confirmation wave” ψ* backward in time. The transaction is complete when the two waves establish a standing pattern across spacetime.
The critical insight: this isn’t a new interpretation layered on top of the formalism. It’s what the formalism already says. The Born rule P = ψψ* is literally the product of the offer and confirmation waves. Every probability is a completed transaction between forward and backward time.
Standard quantum mechanics uses both components in every calculation but refuses to assign physical meaning to the backward-propagating one. The Copenhagen interpretation says ψ* is “just the complex conjugate.” The transactional interpretation says it’s the advanced wave, propagating from the absorber back to the emitter, confirming the transaction.
The mathematics is identical. The interpretation is what changes.
The Deleted Time-Symmetric Sector
Now connect this to the paper’s argument.
When Heaviside simplified Maxwell’s equations and the Lorenz gauge was imposed, one of the things that got deleted was the advanced solution to the wave equation. The general solution admits both retarded potentials (outward-propagating, forward in time) and advanced potentials (inward-propagating, backward in time). Standard practice keeps the retarded solutions and discards the advanced ones as “unphysical.”
Wheeler and Feynman showed this is not required by the theory. The time-symmetric formulation is fully consistent with observation. Discarding advanced solutions is a boundary condition choice, not a physical law.
But here’s the thing that really bothers me: quantum mechanics never actually discarded the advanced solutions. It kept them. They’re in every ψ*. Every overlap integral. Every matrix element. Every expectation value. The time-symmetric sector that classical electrodynamics deleted in the 1880s was immediately smuggled back into quantum mechanics through the complex conjugate structure of the wave function.
The deletion happened at the interpretive level. The physics kept the mathematics of advanced waves. The narrative declared them meaningless.
What This Means
I want to be precise about the claim and its limits.
The claim is structural, not speculative: the Born rule’s mathematical form already contains both time directions. This is not contested. It’s a property of the formalism that anyone can verify.
The interpretive step, treating ψ* as a physically meaningful advanced wave, is Cramer’s contribution. It’s consistent with the formalism but not required by it. The Copenhagen interpretation works perfectly well by treating ψ* as a mathematical device. You can calculate every experimentally verified prediction without ever assigning temporal direction to the complex conjugate.
The Wheeler-Feynman absorber theory has its own limitations. It requires the universe to be a “perfect absorber,” a cosmological boundary condition that depends on the large-scale structure of the universe. In an expanding universe with a cosmological horizon, this condition may not hold. The theory makes a testable cosmological prediction, but one that’s hard to verify independently.
What I find compelling is the pattern. The same degrees of freedom that Heaviside and the Lorenz gauge deleted from classical electrodynamics (the advanced solutions, the time-symmetric sector) turn out to be structurally present in quantum mechanics, hidden in the one piece of mathematical machinery that nobody questions: the complex conjugate.
The “measurement problem” in quantum mechanics, the question of why measurement appears to collapse the wave function, may be partly a consequence of insisting that ψ* is physically meaningless. If ψ* is actually an advanced wave, then “collapse” is a completed transaction. Not a paradox. A handshake.
The full argument, including seven other lines of evidence for the physical content of deleted degrees of freedom, is in my paper “The Deleted Degrees of Freedom.” Free to read.

I believe this means that when someone makes a high certainty, high precision PREDICTION about the outcome of an applied intention that the response from the universe to alter reality to minimize the free energy or surprisal that would result is sent both into the future and the past. I think by doing this the universe can find the way to minimize the "free energy" that would occur if the PK intention did not manifest with the LEAST ACTION required.
I am wondering what would be the best psychokinetic experiment to show this in the laboratory. I know retroactive PK has been proven with random number generators, but I mean a more convincing experiment on the macro level.
Perhaps an experiment would be that the outcome of a blood test that should be negative (bad) according to a person's health history actually be very good. So when the results are read by the first human to see them the healing would have had to happen IN THE PAST retroactively.
